Why you joined nursing?
For a long time I worked at a couple of successful jobs but was not achieving the type of satisfaction that I wanted. I decided to return to school full time to guide me in a direction that would be more beneficial to myself, and ultimately others. I am a natural'people person' and felt that Nursing was the career that I could make the biggest difference. Smart, motivated, and educated Nurses are the future for health care in Ontario, and I feel confident enough to be part of the bright future this profession has to offer us students who long to be part of the health care team.

What makes NSO superlative?
Everyone needs a group or a person(s) to go to for help and direction. The NSO offers a resource for Nursing students to gain information or voice an opinion regarding the future of the profession. Being accessible is key for students to have involvement in the political aspects of Nursing, and I feel the NSO offers a dedicated group of members who will listen, advocate, and represent the opinions and concerns of all students in Ontario.

My hopes/aspirations?
Hopes: to achieve superior knowledge and skills to effectively practice Nursing, gaining trust and respect from my patients, fellow students, and future colleagues. Aspirations: to remain politically active, and become a familiar face amongst those who who already represent, and are are trying to make a difference for Nurses and Nursing students in Ontario.

If you were a car/animal/food/element on the periodic table/jackaloupe what would you be?
Food: a peppered steak with a side of garlic buttered asparagus...'nuff said. Periodic Element: Iridium. Rare on earth, and unique to meteorites. Mysterious in nature, but used in stable applications, bettering mankind. Car: CAR?! Mountain bike. Hitting up the trails in the Rocky mountains. A voyage of discovery unto its own.

why I joined nursing?
I chose to study Nursing after spending 4 years doing my BA. I was in my third year of a degree in English and Drama, and I didn`t know what I wanted to do after I finished. I have always been interested in Biology and Nursing, as my mother and both my grandmothers are Nurses. My ``ah-ha`` moment came when I witnessed the birth of my goddaughter. I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in Perinatal Nursing.

What makes NSO superlative?
Ontario is privileged to have it`s Nursing Professional association separate from it`s governing body. I believe NSO can assist RNAO in raising awareness for the Nursing profession. NSO has great potential to do amazing things, and I would like to be there to see it happen and participate in the process.

My Hopes/aspirations?
I hope to become a NP and continue my studies. I also aspire to complete my Masters and PhD in Healthcare Informatics

If I were a car/animal/food/element on the periodic table/jackaloupe I would be?
CAR: Ford Mustang GT- Blue
ANIMAL: A BUNNY!!!
FOOD: I’d be something tasty......but not spicy, cause spicy makes my tongue burn....Mashed Potatoes maybe??
ELEMENT: I’d be helium........Fun at parties....

Alyson Hill   Email

Northern Director

Alyson is currently in her second year in the 3-year compressed nursing program at Lakehead University. She is an active member of her community, spending many hours volunteering and teaching at a local dance studio. Alyson is passionate about health care and specifically health care in Northern Ontario. She hopes to further her education and practice in Thunder Bay or a surrounding rural community. Northern Ontario provides a unique diversity of cultures and Alyson believes it is both challenging and rewarding to practice in Northern Ontario. Since Thunder Bay and surrounding communities are relatively isolated from major metropolitan centres of the province, it is important to maintain partnership with RNAO/NSO and other nursing related associations. For nursing students in Northern Ontario, NSO is a great resource in gaining information about the profession and it can promote interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration amongst communities in Ontario. On a less serious note, her favourite foods include salmon and chicken caesar salad.

why I joined nursing?
Although I have worked in the presence of nurses during the human genome project, I really didn't have a good grasp of what they did. That soon changed as soon as I had a beautiful baby girl; it was nurses who helped me through so much both in the hospital and home care setting. In my first year of school, I was asked to define health. Seemingly simple, the question was actually loaded, and my professor turned to the World Health Organization's definition. It was much more encompassing than the simple biomedical answer (devoid of disease) which really challenged a lot of values I had come into nursing with. At the risk of sounding trite, my personal aspirations are to help facilitate positive change globally, particularly for the vulnerable populations; to make this world a better place for my daughter at the very least.

What makes NSO superlative?
With the NSO, I believe joining such an organization does credit to nursing students who have already begun their professional careers; I also believe this particular group understands the political perspective of health, a concept sometimes fleeting, but I have truly grown to appreciate. I look forward to meeting/learning with you all, and hope many of you will participate in the World Health Organization simulation.

If I were a car/animal/food/element on the periodic table/jackaloupe I would be?
CAR: anything 007 drives
ANIMAL: clownfish
FOOD: artichoke
ELEMENT: Helium (heal-ium… oh, that’s nerdy)

why I joined nursing?
I never really thought seriously about nursing until I decided to go back for my second round of schooling. It was a toss up between two professional degrees, and it most likely has to be the influence of my aunt, slight nudge from the parents, and a dash of the economics that pushed me towards nursing. Though, looking at it now, this is probably the only profession that is altruistic in a grand scale, that's something I like.

What makes NSO superlative?
Being tied directly to a professional association that is very active in advocating and voicing its concerns and the concerns of fellow nurses for change and health. Another reason why the NSO is great is that in the coming term, you will see the NSO as being more interactive, with more of its faces out there. There will be many new activities rolled out along side with many incentives and prizes. So...stay tuned, and keep on looking at your emails and the new NSO website ( www.nso-eio.ca) for more info

My Hopes/aspirations?
My Hopes: to not go bald before the end of my education. My Aspirations: to be an agent of change in providing fair equalizations for all

If I were a car/animal/food/element on the periodic table/jackaloupe I would be?
CAR: Lotus Elise, great engineering, shapely, light and nimble
ANIMAL: Racoon, because they can hide like ninjas in the dark
FOOD: Rice, glutenous rice...um...gluten, how about corn starch and water!
ELEMENT: Hg (mercury): diphasic element (well almost...but you still can't beat liquid metal!!!) at room temperature. Only the T-1000 can compete with this!!! In fact, survey says, the T-1000 got owned in this competition!!!
